Chapter Thirteen: Mia
Trying to shake off the strange feeling, I change quickly. Throwing on black leggings and a gray t-shirt with the bandâs name on it. I nod at the mirror approving just how unsexy I am right now. I stop at the sink to wash my face and brush my teeth. I want to make sure there is no trace of vomit anywhere. So gross!! As an afterthought, I throw my long hair back into a messy bun. There, that completes my totally plain and unattractive outfit. I chuckle and head for the door.
I raise my hand to knock as I come up to her room but realize she has left the door propped open with the latch from the inside. Thatâs a little dangerous, but I walk right in and close the door behind me.
âOh good, you made it!â she says cheerfully. The pain that was on her face is gone again, for now.
âYeah, but please donât prop the door open anymore. I was just thinking it was a little dangerous,â I tease. âLike the beginning of a horror movie.â
âHa, well maybe I was hoping for a bit of excitement, inviting danger in. But youâre here instead soâ¦â her smile fades as she lets the thought hang in the air. I notice she has gotten comfortable too. A gray ribbed tank top over a black sports bra. Black joggers that hug her hips nicely.
âUmâ¦if that was meant to be a joke, it wasnât funny. Just close your door next time, I can knock, okay,â I add, not wanting to stare too long.
âYouâre right, that was lame. Donât tell anyone, though. Canât have people knowing Iâm not really that funny,â she gives me a wink as she passes me heading for the sofa.
Smiling and shaking my head because I know she doesnât care what people think, I follow. She plops down and reaches for the remote, turning on the TV. Itâs a very normal thing to do, I suppose, but we just never have time for ânormal.â I canât remember a time where we sat together, just watching TV. She scrolls through channel after channel, nothing really piquing her interest and finally lands on MTV. Itâs an episode of Catfish, I recognize Nev and Max instantly.
âIsnât this show crazy,â I say, âhow do you fall in love with someone youâve never met?â
âWhoa, that was a little more superficial for you than I expected,â she says looking almost impressed.
âNo, Iâm not saying that love is all physical, but I think that intimacy is important,â I reply defensively.
âYeah, of course, but not everyone has the natural beauty that you have or the self-confidence,â she pauses and looks down at her hands. But I donât buy that for a second from the gorgeous Rockstar. âAnd you knowâ¦not everyone is good atâ¦intimacy and relationships and all that.â There is a faint hint of bitterness or maybe longing in her tone. Ah, thatâs why she was looking guilty a second ago. Then I realize that I havenât seen her serious with anyone sinceâ¦hmm⦠must have been Rachel.
